Roots of Empathy

About The Roots of Empathy  Program

Roots of Empathy (ROE) is an award winning, evidence-based classroom programme that has shown dramatic effect in reducing levels of aggression and violence among school children while raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy. The programme reaches children from Kindergarten to Grade 8 across Canada, in English and French, in rural, urban, remote and Aboriginal communities both on and off reserve and internationally in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.

This year the "Roots of Empathy" programme is running with  the children of room 13. The programme  involves weekly classroom visits by a mother and young baby so that the class can share in the milestones of the  baby's development. Through this  face to face engagement, the children  become more understanding of the needs of others and  develop  stronger empathy with  class mates and  family members. The programme runs for 1 year and is part of a Ministry of Education  and Roots of Empathy Trust  initiative.
